Why American Ice Age mammals died out

It is commonly argued that man hunted American Ice Age mammals to extinction. Yet human densities in regions like Patagonia never approached the densities that would have hunted mammals to extinction. I have long believed it more likely that human-carried or human pet-carried pathogens infected American mammals to extinction.
