When GPS starts using GPS wisely

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 4 months ago

I arrived in San Jose airport, rented a car with a GPS, and gave it an address on Sand Hill Road. "There is no way to get from here to there", the GPS said. On another occasion, GPS drove me in a circle near the San Jose airport twice before I stopped paying attention to it and drove away on the first street I found.

GPS is a fabulous adaptive technology, except that its maps are often outdated and thus lead to incorrect routing through closed streets, etc. And around San Jose airport, closed streets are an everyday occurrence --the money there gets siphoned out to high-tech start-ups, not old technologies such as fixing roads. Furthermore, real-time information, such as traffic conditions, is often desirable. Downloading information for the entire world is often impractical. So why not use GPS to figure out what information you really need right now?

A long time ago, I filed an invention for a location based services-enabled device, such as a portable navigation system or cell phone, that updates its information, including local map, via satellite/cell network based on the device's location. Such a system would automatically update the maps and associated information (e.g. traffic, ads, restaurant and cinema seating availability, etc.) in a GPS device or a mobile phone via wireless telecommunications, concentrating on updating only the relevant information in the vicinity of the current and/or predicted location of the device, which it can obtain by using GPS, triangulation or another location-establishing system. This would allow the incorporation of dynamic traffic information for route estimation, as well as the updating of advertising and local sites information, which change more rapidly than streets themselves, and would benefit from a dynamic bidding and/or matching system. You could download only changes from the last downloaded or factory-loaded map version to reduce download time.

The time for such a device has arrived. It's time GPS-enabled devices started using GPS wisely.

Up to Technology.
